Zimbabwe’s Harare Mayor Arrested Over Graft Claims

The mayor of Zimbabwe’s capital, Harare, was arrested on Wednesday over allegations of corruption surrounding allocation of public land.

Jacob Mafume spent the night at a police station in the city and has not commented on the accusations.

Mr Mafume was elected as mayor in September.

The opposition MDC Alliance party has accused the government of “weaponizing the law against its members.

It stated via a tweet that Mr. Mafume’s  supposed offence was winning the mayoral vote for the MDC Alliance and the oppositions are bent on removing him with the cunning intention  of replacing  him with a Zanu PF proxy.

However, State-owned Herald newspaper quotes a police spokesperson as saying police will give more information on the arrest on Today.
