NPFL Clubs Missing From Africa’s Top 20 Spenders

Nigerian Professional Football League clubs were conspicuously missing from the shortlist of Top 20 spenders in the African transfer market in the last 10 years.

This was stated in a document published by FIFA, which was seen by our correspondent.

The clubs are from five countries in Africa – Egypt, South Africa, Morocco, Tunisia and DR Congo.

Egypt is ranked the highest by FIFA in transfers with five clubs with Pyramids FC, Al Ahly, El Zamalek, Smouha and Wadi Degla actively recruiting players yearly.

South Africa came second on the list with four teams -+Mamelodi Sundowns, Wits University FC, Orlando Pirates and Maritzburg United.

Tunisia are ranked third with Club Africain, ES Zarzis and CS Sfaxien, while Angola are fourth with Recreativo Caala, Kabuscorp Palanca, CD Primeiro de Agosto the biggest spenders.

DR Congo are fifth with TP Mazembe and Recreativo Caala the clubs who have spent the most.

In Morocco, Raja Casablanca and Wydad Athletic Club are the biggest spenders in the last decade.

Our correspondent gathered that these clubs made the most transfers – both incoming and outgoing – as well as paying and receiving the largest amounts in transfer fees — 73,561 transfers were outgoing and 75,720 incoming transfers.

They were involved in considerably more transfers than the clubs in Africa.

Furthermore, the report also revealed that African clubs sold 3,166 players to Asian Football Confederation, receiving a total sum of $104.5m while a total of 4,037 players were sold to European clubs with $317.5m received.

Also, 164 players were traded to the CONCACAF with $6.8m paid and to the CONMEBOL, 164 players were sold and $6.8m received.
