Burkina Faso’s Hugues Fabrice Zango won bronze in men’s triple jump Olympic champion today, to claim his country’s first-ever Olympic medal.
Portugal’s Pedro Pichardo was crowned men’s triple jump Olympic champion today, winning with a national record of 17.98 metres.
China’s Zhu Yaming took silver with a personal best of 17.57m and Hugues Zango won the bronze.
Zango, who earlier broke his own African outdoor record with a jump of 17.82 metres, won bronze at the 2019 World Championships.
Zango said he missed a crowd to celebrate his winning off first Olympic medal in Burkina Faso’s history.
28-year-old Hugues Fabrice Zango is a Burkinabé athlete who specialises in the triple jump and the long jump.
Zango competed at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil before winning bronze medal at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan in the triple jump event, the first-ever Olympic medal for Burkina Faso.
He has also competed in World Championships, two African athletics championships, a Jeux de la Francophonie, two Summer Universiades and two African Games.
He became the first-ever medalist for Burkina Faso with a bronze medal and African record at the 2019 World Athletics Championships in Doha.
