The appointment of Randy Waldrum as the Super Falcons head coach by the Nigeria Football Federation has triggered reactions from former players of the women’s national team.
The NFF on Monday announced the American as the new handler of the Falcons, who had been without a coach since former coach Thomas Dennerby resigned in 2019.
The American had served as the head coach of the Trinidad and Tobago national team between 2014 and 2016 and also worked as the U-23 coach of the United States in 2012 and 2013.
Some ex-players of the Falcons shared their opinions about Waldrum and his job with the team.
Seun Bello, who played for the Falcons in 2015 and 2016, said the Falcons would benefit from Waldrum’s experience.
Another Falcons star, Okunwa Igunbor-Sowemimo said It is a great thing that the Falcons now have a coach with ex-Falcons players as his assistants.
Judith Chime, an ex-goalkeeper of the national women’s side, however, disagreed with Bello and Igunbor-Sowemimo, saying the NFF should have appointed a Nigerian gaffer for the team.
“Developed countries employ their own citizens in such positions and it helps in the development process generally. It is good that the Falcons have a coach now but what is bad is that the NFF went for a foreigner,” Chime said.
