Delsu Reduces COVID-19 Levy As Okowa Intervenes

The management of Delta State University, Abraka, has reviewed the N5,000 COVID-19 levy to N4,000 following the intervention of the state governor, Dr Ifeanyi Okowa.

This was contained in the university’s official bulletin issued by the Information and Public Relations Division of the Vice Chancellor’s Office.

The university had asked undergraduate students to pay N5,000 and postgraduate students to pay N10,000 as COVID-19 levy arguing that the fund raised will be used to upgrade health facilities on the campus to prevent the spread of the virus.

The students kicked against the fees and shut down the school in protest, a development which compelled the governor to wade in.

The institution’s bulletin read in part, “This gesture should be seen as a positive disposition of the present university administration to sustain the cordial relationship that exists between the university management and the students.”

According to the bulletin, the bursary department of the university would work out a procedure for the refund of N1,000 to students who had already complied with the payment of the earlier sum of N5,000.

It was gathered that the postgraduate students are still to pay the stipulated amount of N10,000.
